Schwarzschild radius
Einstein's theory of relativity gives Rs = 2GM/c^2 as the Schwarzschild radius, where G is the gravitational constant,M is the mass of the object, and c is the speed of light.
First time I see it, and Its 11hrs before my Physics.
But come to think about it, it was never taught, but it appeared in the online tutorial. =/
Interesting Facts
The Schwarzschild radius of an object is the distance within which nothing, not even light, can escape its gravitational attraction. The sphere surrounding a black hole whose radius is the Schwarzschild radius is also called the event horizon.
It would be possible for the earth to orbit the black hole at the same distance that it is from the sun without falling into the event horizon. However, since the black hole is much more massive than the sun, the speed of the earth's orbit would be incredibly high. In fact, if our sun were replaced by the black hole, it would make one earth year (the time to make one complete orbit) equal to just a few hours!

YA right.
You scored as English. Your eyes will fail after reading for so long... at least you will be a walking dictionary/quote machine.
What is your major? created with QuizFarm.com |
YA right I am sure about that.
With my ever so limited vocabulary, wonder who would use me as a dictionary.

Happy Birthdays!
Despite my loss in the nation building battle today, its another happy day!
And the birthday award goes to :
Qiyang who has turned 21 today.
Lucia who has turned 18 today.
Nicholas who has turned 6 today.
Happy Birthday to all of you!

Bah, bad day.
I screwed up my Nation Building today. =/
I dont know why, its my best module. The 3rd paper I am sitting for. I slept sufficiently. Yet when I sat down for the exam, it felt like I hadnt had an exam for ages.
It was horrible. Nothing except blank came out. And the pain... argh.
I suddenly forgot how to write an essay.
And when I started writing for over 20mins, I thought I could have done better doing the other question.
Utterly disappointed with myself.
Wtf happened to me.
Only one thing to say:
I was FUCKED.

1 down
*Bang
1 down 4 to go.
Interestingly, I didnt find MA1505 horribly difficult. Maybe it really isnt that tough. But its one of the rare occasions whereby I dont feel that I will flunk Maths.
But maybe because the 1 piece A4 size help sheet that we could bring was helpful. I didnt have to remember all those irritating formulas and other things.
But now its time to die, EG1109 in 11hrs 30mins and the only revision I did was the online tutorial over the past wk.

changing someone's life
Was proud of myself finishing my revision on the language portion of my Nation Building Module, I decided to reward myself by watching the television.
When I flicked on the remote, up came Extreme Makeover Home Ed. And being an avid fan of interior design and having a soft spot for such shows, I was darn glad indeed. So I carried on watching and they were tasked to change the house of this family of 5 in 7 days. And the family were sent on a cruise for 7days.
So this whole major construction took place.
The crux of this whole makeover is to help make this family like it was before. Because the eldest son in the family apparently had an accident and kind of lost mobility with his legs thus was wheelbounded. He could not enter his house through the main door, eat with the family, cannot go up to his own room etc... So the design team wanted to make all those COULD NOTS into COULDS.
In the 7 days, they installed an elevator in the house. (I am impressed.) Gave them a therapeutic pool to help the son recover his mobility. Resized alot of things.
You can imagine how that changed the family's life.
Although they may not be the poorest family in the world, may not be the family living in a very lousy environment previously, but to change someone's life for the better, thats simply amazing.
At least I know they are definately one of the happiest people for now.
I am definately touched.

Junk Food...
Somehow I was feeling downright low last night. Nothing I did seemed right, totally no drive to do anything. I felt so lost as if i were alone in the desert trying to escape from the vast ocean of sand surronding me.
So I took my phone and wallet and headed downstairs for a walk believing that some fresh air might do me some good. I thought since I was downstairs might as well buy a loaf of bread for the next few day's breakfast. But when I entered 7-11, instead of just picking up the loaf of bread, I was drawn like bees to honey to the tidbits shelves. I just had this sudden impulse to just lose my mind and buy all the tidbits, and munch on them like crazy. But somehow I managed to retain my sanity and bought just a small packet of Ritz Bits with Cheese and a bottle of Minute Maid Lemonade.
En route home I suddenly recalled that the furthest I had gone for the past week was Yio Chu Kang Stadium to run. And I hadnt had any tidbits for like months. Wow, I am impressed. So I headed back home and snacked on my Ritz Bits, and after swooping them down within minutes, I felt much better.
So I guess tidbits do contain certain essence of happiness in them.
Hail to Junk Food.

revision... led surfing
Was doing my revision on Nation Building in Singapore and being lazy to look for my readings, i sorted facts from the net. With Wikipedia and Answers.com being very helpful avenues. I somehow got interested to see the websites of all the Political Parties in Singapore. And I chanced upon this interesting
open letter written to Mr George W Bush the US President by a certain Politician in Singapore.
Not commenting on that or anything related to the politics of Singapore.
And yea, yet again i drifted off my revision... =/

My Inspiring Revision Scheduel
I shouldnt do this I know, but I just cannot help not studying. The urge to do everything else is just too great. The amount of workout I do over the reading week is more than what I did over the past quarter. The amount of TV I watch is 10times the amount I watch over the quarter as well.
I tell myself, "ok start revising in 30mins.." Usually 1hr later I'll say, "Maybe another 30mins..." and usually this whole thing loops infinitely.
But the most surprising thing is that the amount of "NEW " things I learnt from my already infinitesimal revision. I read wonder what I have been doing over the past half a year =/.
Somebody shoot me.

Studying in Singapore
I stole this blog post from a friend:

studying in singapore...
to find a condulsive place for studying in singapore is really not easy...
we have to take risk sitting in the fast food restaurants in case the manager felt that we are taking up too much space and we are just not there to buy their food.. however being a student, our spending power is pretty much limited... more over, eating too much fast food is not desirable as it do much damage to our health... so fast food restaurant is out from the list...
"how bout school?" some may ask... school is not very near to some of us, especially for the most of the university students... so what happen to those who dun stay near? where should they go?
home... is really comfortable to stay at home isn't it? for some... is just too comfortable... so where can we study?
if you suggest that we can study in community centre as well... how much space they can offer to us? could it fit in so many student?
studying in library is good.. but sometimes when you go out for lunch ur things might get packed away by the staff who "advise you not to leave your stuff unattended"... it is, though, stated clearly that reservations of seats are not allow but what do we do when we want to go for lunch? can we bring food into the library?...so it is out too...
government had encourage student to study and be educated... they have drawn out and carried out plans that attract people to study as well... but just how much condulsive space are we, the student, given to study hard? may someone high above bless all those student who cant find place to study to get good grades....
_______________________________________________
I think the issue here, is whether you want to study or not. Whether you have the discipline to do it or not. NO matter what lengths you go to, if you are determined and disciplined. You can do it. You would even go from East Coast to NTU just to study if you find everywhere else unsuitable. Or even, if home seems to comfortable, FIGHT the "ZEE" monster... (zZZz).

Simple Beam Experiment
My dear Simple Beam Experiment Website.
Please freaking stop irritating me. I just wasted 2 hours of my life trying to submit the damn result of a 5mins experiment by having to do it at least 20 times just to try submitting 20times.

Flushed Away...
After physics lect today, I went to meet Na in town. We had agreed to watch Flushed Away, today. It has been awhile since I been to the movies.
The show is pretty fun, it certainly has critical scenes that will definately make u smile or even laugh out loud. So if you guys are interested in a bit of animated humour mixed with a pinch of cartoon romance. Go for it, it might help reduce the pre-examination stress.

CS1101c Practical Exam (PE)
One word to describe it ---> Cui aka 脆
But looking on the bright side, i knew the meaning of Palindrome.
For the benefit of those who dont, a palindrome is a sentence or word that means the same thing read forward or backwards irregardless of the punctuation.
For example,
Madam
A man, a plan, a canal, Panama!
Well now that you know what does that mean, let me talk a bit about my programming PE.
Well, we were given a source file that contains 25 strings (strings = sentences in C language) So we had to read in the file and print out the results exactly as what the question wanted. In the process, we also had to test whether the string was a palindrome and also to check the number of occurances of each word. Ie. "The" came out 5 times, "A" came out 8 times etc. So for the 1hr 45mins that I was in there, I spent effectively almost 45mins reading and thinking of the
algorithm and thus I spent 1hr fully on coding. So in the end I only managed to read in the file, printed out the strings properly by removing the unwanted '\n' character before the '\0' character. Although I had written a function to check whether the string was a palindrome it didnt work, but after attending the tutorial I realised I had seen that in a sample solution but I didnt remember it.
Oh well.
Now to shift to 5th gear since its reading week soon. Full throttle ahead!

7% GST!
GST will be risened to 7% from the original 5%.
This was announced by PM Lee in Parliament today.
Aim is to increase the Social Safety Nets which is necessary to help the lower income group.
*Social Safety Net is basically means government aid to those in the lower income grp. Such aid maybe in the form of welfare or other things such as subsidies.
Also, there are also plans to give more grant to first time home owners and more "workfare" to entice those in the region of lower income to stay employed.
More details will be released on 15th Feb (Budget Day)
But in my opinion, I still think that the poor will be hit badly by this hike in taxes. Despite the promised lucrative package that will offset any impact of the rise in taxes to the poor. As usually due to the rise in GST. EVERYTHING will have a rise hike, even vegetables from the wet market.
Well, Singapore is now going through the stage where developed countries face all the time. Widening income gap.
I still think the best way to reduce this impact is to increase the income tax instead of GST since anyway who earn less have more tax relief. However with increased income tax, more of Singapore's elite would be turned-off and thus reducing the attractiveness of foreign talent coming in as well. However this would definately benefit the lower income group more as there is no direct impact on them.
Its tough being a decision maker. Haha.

Grandma..
Well, my grandma finally came back from Xiamen. I am pretty much proud of her because she went there by herself with the tour group without her children for the first time! And she bought ALOT of things. She bought a flask, a few packets of mushrooms, a few packets of sea cucumber, a lot of candies/biscuits, peanuts, and alot more other things. Haha, of course she bought a new luggage bag(Which is definately bigger than the original one that she brought there) to contain all her loot that is to be brought back to Singapore.
Went to the airport to pick her up with my Aunts, Mummy & Uncle. As we reached quite early, we went for coffee and had a little get together session. After that, I was allowed to drive back!
First time on the highway. Was abit slow but as I see more cars overtake me, i decided to try picking up the pace and soon before I know it, I was driving at 90km/h. Although there was a certain thrill driving fast, but with so many people sitting at the back of the car. I knew I had to be extra careful, with great power comes great responsibilty.
But after a late night drive on the expressway, I feel that my confidence of driving has definately increased. And there wasnt any complains from anyone of my passengers. Haha

Programming...
This is not good.
My Practical Exam for Programming is on the coming wednesday. The duration is 1hr 45mins. But I took 2 days to do my prog lab this week and I didnt even complete it. So I guess it will be a goner.
Although it wasnt complete, it is still my longest ever program that I have written so I am still rather pleased with myself.
Although average is good enough for me at my current standard.
I usually dont take average as an option. In fact now I am below par.
Lets hope average wont be a word that will be bugging me for life.

Typing furiously alot?
Working alot with the computer???
What's RSD?
Repetitive Stress Disorder occurs due to a gradual build up of the small amounts of bodily damage that occurs on a daily basis. The damage usually occurs due to repetitive motions and sustained postures of a fixed group of muscles.
For instance, regular activities such as typing, computer keyboarding, using a mouse (more so than typing), driving a car, operating a cash register and playing computer games can gradually lead to carpal tunnel syndrome.
In RSD, it is not the physical force used that matters, but the amount of time your muscles and tendons spend under tension.
Repetitive hand action results in swollen tissues in your wrist, which can then compress adjoining blood vessels and nerves, leading to the irritation of nerves and reduced blood supply.
Prevent RSD
You do not have to wait till you actually begin to see symptoms of RSD. You can prevent repetitive injury by following these workstation tips:
~ Pay attention to your posture at all times. Do not work with your hands too close or too far from your body. Keep your eyes level with the screen.
~ Adjust the height of your chair so that your forearms are at the same level as the keyboard and you don't need to flex your wrists to type.
~ Do not rest your wrists on hard surfaces for long periods.
~ Avoid tight watchstraps or jewellery and clothes with tight elastic sleeves.
~ Take regular and frequent mini-breaks from using the computer keyboard.
~ Extend your arms out with palms facing out and fingers pointing up. Hold for a count of five. Straighten your wrists and relax your fingers.
Then make a tight fist with each hand. Bend your wrists down and count to five. Repeat these stretches eight to 10 times during each break.
~ Do not press on hard surfaces with the heel of your hand while rising from your seat.
~ Ergonomic (especially designed to suit the human anatomy and facilitate tasks without injury) keyboards are available; these can reduce the stress on your wrists.
~ A wrist rest on your mouse pad or a specially designed mouse might help, though the effectiveness of these measures has not been scientifically demonstrated.
~ Keep the mouse as close to the keyboard as possible and try to move it with your arm and not your wrist.
~ Lose weight if you are overweight.
In carpal tunnel syndrome, as in most ailments, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.

scribbles...
After scribbling so much in my nation building notes during the lectures, I am now suffering from the consequences of not being able to read what i was scribbling.
But its like rushing to catch a train during nation building lectures. Haix. Guess i should practise on my short hand to make it easier for myself to recognise..
By the way, Happy 100th Post! Haha

furiously..
Prof Victor Shim said this:"... Pressing your calculator furiously."
Because of this, i realised that actually NUS trains many of her students to become furious typists.
U never fail to see students typing away furiously and sometimes i pity the poor keyboard..
Relax people, take a breather... its not about doing things furiously...

lazy sunday...
Every weekend is becoming a lazy weekend especially with it raining..
Very soon i will be overwhelmed and totally consumed by this lethal rain of lethargy. With the gradual loss of energy and the will to battle the lethality of this rain...
I think I shall take a nap.

Retail Therapy..
After today's statics test which i officially mugged very hard since yesterday. I found it too tough to handle, even though i could do most of the questions in the textbooks and i could do the previous quiz.
After that, Sirong drove Geehoe, Waiteng and I out to clementi for lunch. I drank kopi-o while looking at them eat, and i wasnt trying to lose weight. I just wanted tto save space to have lunch with Na. It was a nice lunch trip where we chit-chatted... Shared some of our own experiences etc.
After which I left them, while they went on to do their things. As i reached Northpoint early, i went shopping abit, and i spent $46.65 within 45mins. Haha and nothing was for myself. But after doing this, i felt better as in i was feeling happier and more jovial.. I guess, retail therapy does work sometimes although its not the best way to improve your mood..
After that, Na arrived and we headed off to lunch and had our long lost dosage of coffee..
Now its time to get back to doing my assignments.

sparked me thinking.
An sms from Aaron, sparked off my thinking cap's engine...
thus i came up with this:

Alot of things can happen in life,
Be it good or bad.
BUT only when its strikes us,
Then will we know its existence.
Cherish what you have now.
Before it becomes obliterated.
Its never too late to try,
Never a time to renounce.
Because once you've given up.
You are DEFEATED in life.

People who are successful, be it in their career, love life or family are often victors in life. Because they never say die. And most importantly they keep on trying and refuse to give up.
There is no free lunch in this world. We need to work our butts off to succeed...

finally.
Ok, i havent blog for quite some time. Well, one thing is coz i was still feeling rather sick and the main thing is that i simply had too much things to do..
So i shall do a recap on what i did the past week..
After being Knocked Out by the darn flu bug on monday, i went to school on tuesday. It was pretty well, had a statics n mechanics tutorial followed by a Physics lab.
Straight after the tutorial, Deb and Waiteng gave me a slice of Oreo Cheesecake! for my belated birthday. Well and the cake couldnt have came at a better time,as I started to feel hungry just before the class. Their gesture simply touched me deeply, even though i didnt knew them long, they still made me feel special. Thanks girls.
Then was the Lab lesson. Well, since Faculty of Science was a couple of busstops away from Engineering, so we were kind of late by 20 over minutes. So we started doing the damn experiment, it was quite alright i suppose, but i simply wasnt in the mood to do anything and my brain wasnt functioning very well, my thinking processes were like running at 25% efficiency. But eventually Sirong and me managed to get the results and decided to finish the report at home. Since it was already past 5pm and i had a gathering with the OCS/6SIR guys.
So off i went to meet Zhongwei to leave for glasshouse!
That was the first time i been to glass house and well, i was pretty impressed by their deco. Even the staff are dressed in halloween costumes.. Well the theme was "Bloody Pirates" i presume. At first i thought it was just a gathering of the NUS guys, never expected to see the NTU guys as well. But it was a nice surprise. Well, over at Fish n Co, there were Jack, Luke, Edgar, Zhongwei, Qiyang, Kok Heng and me. We had quite a great time talking cock there, and they refused to let me pay for my meal... Because it was 'pre-determined' by them that i shouldnt pay. And i even received a present which was presented to me by Luke!
After that, we headed to Swensen's to have dessert.. Ice-creammmmMM. Yummy... I had my usual, Frosted Chocolate Malt. But i kind of forgot i was still feverish and i ate a chocolate intensive ice-cream. Opps. But soon, Kuangsheng and Zhichao joined us. Zhichao even took a cab down from school to meet us lor. After that, Jack gave me another present, from him and the compilation of the cards they wrote for me...
Then, we decided to leave after talking a lot more cock at Swensens, and i came up with my reason to why NTU's halls are numbered and not named which is too sensitive to be posted here. (But hey, its a joke) Before we headed our separate ways, we asked a passerby to take a picture of us and after taking our picture, he asked if we are going to NS, and you should see his amazement when we told him we were all NSmen now. He thought we were poly students. Well well, that just made us felt great huh? haha...
This portion is dedicated to all those who met up on tuesday 31st Oct 2006:
Guys, i am very touched by the surprise you guys gave me. I never really saw that coming, it was a very pleasant surprise.
Indeed the strongest bonds are definately those forged by tears, blood and sweat...
quoting from some of the cards given to me:
" .. be it tough ,memorable or savoury, definately we've known and found each other, brothers and friends for life.."
"..even if u finish it, u must remember that u have this buddy here that will always be here for you!..."
Thanks guys for making me feel wanted and important...
This simple gesture moved me deeply, i am tearing as i was typing this...
Love you guys. (No gayism intended..)
